Robert (Bob) Nesta Marley, Singer, Songwriter, Musician, Activist
Today, the city of Toronto, Canada celebrated and declared February 6 as Bob Marley Day, so tonight we spotlight the man and his music. Click here for more information on the celebration.
Born in Jamaica on February 6, 1945, he died at the young age of 36 on May 11, 1981, from cancer. Bob Marley continues to be one of the most admired, "gone-too-soon" singer, songwriter and musician. He dedicated much of his life and music to being an advocate for human rights and an international ambassador for peace.1/
According to people close to Marley, “his stature as a world-renowned black artist writing and performing from an Afrocentric perspective failed to gain widespread support and enthusiasm among African-Americans. This troubled him deeply, because he wanted African-Americans to hear his message,” his son Ziggy said. However, it is widely believed that hip hop and rap would not have become such powerful social and political musical forces without the influence of Marley's music.2/ His last performance was at the Stanley Theater in Pittsburgh, PA on September 23, 1980. Bob Marley was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. In December 1999, his 1977 album “Exodus” was named Album of the Century by Time Magazine and his song “One Love” was designated Song of the Millennium by the BBC. 3/
