As we close out Women’s History Month, it is most appropriate that we recognize the role of women in the story of the Association.  In this regard, it is important to note that at its inception in the early sixties as the Trinidad All-Stars (All‑Stars), this was a fraternity of young men, mainly from Trinidad and Tobago but also from the wider Caribbean, who had the audacity to challenge the all-white and nationalistic Washington soccer fraternity and field an all-black team.  At that time, women were not formally associated with the All-Stars, except some spouses and friends who braved the elements to occasionally support the team.

During the mid to late sixties, All-Stars joined with talented individuals such as the late Astor Johnson and transitioned to the Trinidad and Tobago Sporting and Cultural Association. They staged Caribbean themed variety shows to celebrate the Christmas holidays as well as to raise funds. Although, more women became involved as ardent supporters of these events, they were still not officially recognized as “members” of the fledgling Association. Then in 1970, the Trinidad and Tobago Sporting and Cultural Association filed Articles of Incorporation in the District of Columbia and adopted the name Trinidad and Tobago Association of Washington, DC. (Association).

Soon thereafter, the Association decided to purchase 1501 Delafield Place NW, Washington, DC and with that came an increased number of women who participated in the fundraising activities related to the purchase, often in the face of indifference.  It was at that time, a female supporter emphatically declared that the Association must bring diversity and inclusivity to the membership, to better represent the society of Trinidad and Tobago, as there were no female members in the Association.  This declaration was the “straw that broke the camel’s back” and women became active in the management of the Association.  In fact, they became the driving force, growing the membership, improving and making the Association more representative of the Trinidad and Tobago community in Washington, DC

Today, we salute all the female members and supporters of the Association, past and present, we celebrate and thank you for your contributions, dedication and continued commitment to the preservation of our beloved Association.
